I’m pleased to provide you with the following services:
Translation

When I translate your content, I take account of the type of text involved, its style, its register (is it formal or informal?), its terminology (making sure technical terms are correct and used appropriately), its intended audience (who is it written for?) and its purpose (what should it achieve?).

This ensures that the finished translation is both faithful to your original German or Spanish text and suitable for its intended British readership.

Please refer to my sectors for details of the fields in which I work and the kind of texts I translate in each field.

Transcreation

A combination of translation and copywriting that is particularly suited to marketing and advertising products and services, or getting people on board with a particular cause or mission.

Often, the kind of writing that sells and persuades in Germany or Spain would not have the same effect in the UK. The cultural examples in the text might be foreign to a British audience and the form of address may not appeal to them.

Working closely with you to understand your needs and requirements, I take your original German or Spanish content as a basis for producing copy in British English that conveys the same essential message. To do so, I may adapt, change, add or even remove content to ensure that your message has the desired impact in the UK, consulting closely with you throughout the process.

Transcreation is suitable for headlines, slogans, advertisements and other kinds of texts with a persuasive and motivational focus.

Does that sound like the kind of service you need?

Then please drop me a line and I’ll be more than happy to assist you!

Proofreading and editing

Perhaps you have a text in English and need a native British English speaker to check it for surface-level mistakes in terms of grammar, punctuation and spelling to ensure it reads correctly. If so, it’s proofreading you’re looking for.

Or maybe you’d like me to take a closer look at your English text to improve its readability, flow and structure (and I will of course still correct any grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes). In this case, editing’s what you need.

If you require proofreading or editing services, simply contact me and I’ll be delighted to help!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any questions about the services above?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions. If you can’t find what you’re looking for,
please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information.

How much do you charge for translation/transcreation/proofreading/editing?

This depends on a number of factors, including the volume of text involved, its level of complexity, the amount of research required and its urgency. Please contact me for a no-obligation quote, which I will typically provide within 24 hours.

What experience and qualifications do you have?

I’ve been working as a professional translator (German and Spanish to English) since 2007. I spent the first five years of my career working in an in-house language services department for a major telecommunications company, which allowed me to gain a tremendous amount of experience in the profession before becoming a freelance translator in 2012. I have a BA in German and Spanish, and an MA in Interpreting and Translating, both from the University of Bradford, and am a Qualified Member of the UK’s Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI). Additionally, I hold ISO 17100:2015 Qualified status, which recognises that I work to international standards in the profession, and I undertake regular continuing professional development (CPD) activities to enhance my skills and keep my knowledge up to date.

How do you ensure quality in your work?

I use tools such as SDL Trados Studio (translation memory software) and PerfectIt (proofreading software) to ensure consistent terminology use, phrasing, spelling and grammar, and I proofread and edit my own completed translations/transcreations once in their entirety as part of my standard service. I can also offer a second round of proofreading/editing by a trusted colleague for an additional charge if required. As for my working practices, I adhere to the standards of the ITI Code of Professional Conduct.

What’s wrong with any of the free translation tools online?

Translation tools, such as Google Translate, certainly have their uses. For instance, you could use them to understand the gist of an email or to gain a rough idea of what a text is about (though be careful not to enter any confidential information into a search engine). However, for content that is business-critical and essential to your company or organisation’s image, you should use a professional human translator. Additionally, it is important that this person is a native speaker of the language you wish your text to be translated into, as this gives them the essential cultural knowledge and understanding of the nuances of that language that are necessary to avoid making translation blunders. Such errors could cost your company or organisation dearly in both financial and reputational terms. If you’re still on the fence about using online translation tools, then just Google “translation fails”.

I’ve found a cheaper quote. Why should I still go with you?

Considering the time and cost you’ve invested in your original documents, you want to know that they are being handled by someone who will give the necessary time and attention to the translation/transcreation process, and someone who specialises in your sector. Providers offering very low quotes are almost certain to be cutting corners with your translation/transcreation. I’ll take the time to understand your needs and do a thorough, high-quality job of your translation/transcreation to ensure it serves its intended purpose. Also, you’ll know exactly who you’re working with (me) and be able to rely on a fast response to all your queries. My clients see my services as a worthwhile investment.

What are your payment terms/methods?

New clients are required to pay in advance, either the full amount or a 50% deposit (with the rest to be paid upon completion of the job), depending on the size and type of text involved. Otherwise, I require payment within 30 days of an invoice being issued. I accept payment via online transfer only, either to my Wise euro account or my Wise sterling account.
